Abstract:
The main purpose of this paper was to study the application of ICT in economic development of a country. Obviously, factors like high literacy rate, low population growth, high savings, investment, better health facilities, peace, political stability, employment opportunities and increase in per capita income are indispensable for the socio-economic development of a country. Usually it is difficult to measure empirical relationship between ICT and economic development. However, effort has been made in the present study to examine linkage between ICT and economic development. It has been observed that more FDI comes in the telecom sector and the contribution of this sector in the GDP is increasing day by day and the data demonstrates that FDI in this sector would certainly generate business activities, employment opportunities and will reduce poverty in the country. Thus, it has been concluded that ICT plays a vital role in the socio-economic development of Pakistan because ICT can provide access to knowledge in different sectors such as agriculture, industry, education, and human rights, offering a new realm of choices that enable the poor to improve their quality of life.
