Abstract:
In a controlled clinical trial in hospital, T.B. patients it has been shown that simultaneous use of Probenecid with PAS can block the excretion of PAS and sustain blood levels A dose of 2.5 gm of PAS Sodium with 0 5 gm of Probenecid produces and maintains similar blood levels as 5 gm.(10 tables of 0.5 gm) of PAS Sodium used without Probenecid. However, it was observed that increase of PAS to 3.0 gm. (6 tablets) did not significantly increase blood levels. A reduction of dose of PAS to 2.0 mg(4 tablets) gave lower levels, but will not reduce the cost of treatment as the cost of PASProbenecid combination will be higher than PAS alone.
