Abstract:
n this paper the cranial muscles of Mystus vittatus have been described. The cranial part of the fish is divided into five regions namely the cheek, opercular, orbital, dorsal branchial and ventral branchial. The cheek region has five muscles that are Adductor mandibularis, Levator arcus palatini, Adductor arcus palatini, Extensor tentaculi and Retractor tentaculi. They are responsible for the opening and closing of mouth. Ventral side of the head has five muscles, the Intermandibularis, Protractor hyoidei, Hyohyoidei inferiors, Hyohyoidei abductor and Hyohyoidei adductor. The opercular region is controlled by three muscles namely Dilator operculi, Adductor operculi and Levator operculi. The orbital region has an eyeball and there are six muscles that are involved in the movement of eyeball, these are Rectus internus, Obliquus superior and Obliquus inferior, Rectus superior, Rectus inferior, Rectus extrenus. In the dorsal branchial region, six muscles present are namely Dorsal obliquus I and II and Levator arcuum branchial I, II, III and IV. In the ventral branchial region, five muscles present are Rectus communis, Subarcualus recti, Transverse ventralus, Coracohyoidei and Sphinctor oesophagi
