Abstract:
Largely pea is a multipurpose crop. Plants have to face different harsh environmental conditions among which salinity is one of the major widespread abiotic stresses for plants. The present work was conducted to observe the effects of salt (0 and 80 mM) on two different cultivars of the pea plants and role of foliar application of ZnSO4 in alleviating the adverse effect of salt stress. The results showed that all growth, physiological and biochemical parameters of plants are adversely affected by salt stress. However, foliar application of ZnSO4 at 500ppm seems more effective in retaining chlorophyll contents and improving growth both under control and salt stress conditions. Overall, cultivar tiger had increased yield under salt stress in terms of number of seeds and number of pods per plant. Suggesting tiger cultivar may be useful to grow under salt stress conditions along with foliar application of 500 ppm of ZnSO4. Foliar application of ZnSO4 may be recommended to farmers to improve the productivity of crops that are grown under salt stress conditions.
