The control of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease: an outline of WHO activities.

Abstract:
Rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease are preventable by treating streptococcal infections adequately. WHO is currently favouring to start pilot grammes in various countries with the objective of making surveillance of known cases of rheumatic heart disease and rheumatic fever in the community and regular penicillin prophylaxis and study of incident and prevalence of the disease. In addition, WHO into national Reference Centre for streptococcus typing in Prague has maintained a collection of reference strains for the preparation of grouping and typing sera and for the production of extracellular streo tococcal products.
