Abstract:
A prospective study was carried out to assess the incidence of potential blood contamination of the surgeons` conjunctivae and face during tonsillectomy, from 1st May 2003 till 30th July 2003 at DHQ Hospital Timergara District Dir NWFP. 50 patients (25 male and 25 female, mean age 13.6+ 5.5 years) who underwent tonsillectomies were included in this study. All the tonsillectomies were performed under general anaesthesia. Operating masks and glasses were used during these operations and examined by nacked eye and microscopy to detect blood contamination. We found out that in 24% of the procedures blood splashes were noted on eye glasses and masks. Therefore eye and face protection is necessary during each surgical procedure including tonsillectomy.
