Abstract:
This study was conducted in January 2005, which evaluates the adoption of modern agricultural machinery among small, medium and large farmers in Union Council Palosi, District Peshawar. Main objectives for this study were to examine the type and extent of adoption of modern agricultural machinery among the three different groups of farmers (small, medium and large) and to know the type of agricultural machinery they posses and for how many years they are using it. At the end cost per annum in rupees on tractor operations was calculated for small, medium and large farmers. To know the level of significance t-test was applied. The results revealed that among the three groups of farmers 11.25% owned tractor. While 88.75% had not owned it. Non of the farmer possessed his own irrigation tube well and spray pump. Amongst tractor owners, 88.88% also owned thresher, 44.44% ridger, 100% chisel plough and blade with it. High cost of machinery and fuel, unawareness and small landholdings were the major obstacles in the adoption of modern agro-machinery. Farmers started use of tractor and thresher in different periods, which are distributed into six categories. A big majority (31.25%) had started its use from 21-25 years ago. The difference in cost for all the three groups of farmers was significant on tractor operations per annum in rupees. This shows that larger the farm size grater is the adoption of modern agricultural machinery.
