Abstract:
The responses of B. tropicus to water conditioned by conspecific heterospecific adult snails and to artificially formulated media have been investigated using a Y-maze. The snails were found to be attracted to water conditioned by conspecifics for one week but medium conditioned for three weeks was avoided. Similar avoidence of concentrated, dilaysed conspecific conditioned water was observed. A neutral response was observed to two week conspecific conditioned water and also to three week hetero-specific conditioned medium. Three week old lettuce infusion and ammonia in low concentrations was found to be attractant but at higher concentrations the latter served as repellent to B. tropicus. The results are consistent with the suggestion that some sort of inhibitory compound is released by the snails into the culture water during the conditioning period
