Abstract:
During January 1990 to March1989, 50 cases of acute otitis media were assessed clinically. There were 32 males and 18 females. Twenty three of these patients were adults and 27 were children. The disease is as prevalent in adolescents as in children. Forty five out of fifty had otorrhoea on first attendance and tympanic membrane perforation were noticed otoscopically in all these 45 patients. Culture of the organisms from these patients revealed Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus and Proteus to be three most common organisms. These patients were managed on Cefixime, antihistamines, nasal decongestants and analgesics. Cefixime cured 25 (50%) patients, another 11 patients (22%) gradually improved and there was no response in 14 patients. Side effects were noticed in 10 patients. Eight patients not included in the above 50 were withdrawn from the trial for various reasons discussed.
