Abstract:

Objective: The aim of this current research is to investigate the effect of Eruca oil as a skin penetration enhancer, in the preparation of capsaicin cream. Method: In o/w emulsion, Eruca oil was added as the oil phase, a mixture of glyceryl mono-stearate and polysorbate 60 was used as an emulsifier, and Eruca oil was added into the formulation of different concentrations to analyze its effect as skin permeation enhancer. The emulsion was prepared in the lab and different characterization tests were performed to check its stability. Furthermore, rheological studies were conducted to check consistency and Non-Newtonian behavior. Moreover, in-vitro drug release studies were performed using Franz diffusion cells. Results: All the prepared capsaicin formulations were light yellow, viscous preparations having pH 5.5 with excellent consistency. The result of in-vitro drug release studies was matched with that of the commercially available capsaicin cream. In-vitro drug release testing of the newly developed formulations containing different Eruca oil concentrations (F1, F2, F3, F4) was compared with that of the commercially marketed capsaicin cream (0.075%) and found that the developed formulation exhibited better drug release and permeation than commercial formulation. Conclusion: The results conclude that Eruca oil can be used in creams to improve skin permeation, which indicates the superiority of the research product even better than commercial products.
