Abstract:
In field trials conducted at the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), control of grass weed including Sorghum halepense (johnson grass), Echinochloa colonum (junglelerice) and Cyprus rotundus (sedge) increased yield of sunflower by 26-47% in spring and 15-28% in kharif when the plots were kept weed free manually from 3-4 or 4-6 leaf stage to until maturity. The head diameter and 1000 seed weight were also increased with these early time of weeding except plant height as compared to weedy check as well as other treatments. The average labour required to maintain I ha weed free in the spring and kharif seasons were 35-38 and 32-33 at these stages respectively. Also the greater value/cost ranged 1.1 to 2.3 in spring and 1.2 to 1.8 in kharif season were produced by these treatments. Beyond to this stage of weeding increased the cost/ha by requiring more number of labour/ha and reduced the value cost ratios (V/C).
