Abstract:
In this paper, the author has developed a new control chart is developed to monitor the mean of the process as a replacement of the Shewhart control chart. The control chart uses the frequency of the observations, for each sample, exceeding the grand median of the combined samples to construct its control limit. Based on the simulated data considering the most common shape distribution functions: light tail, normal, heavy tail and skewed distributions, some tabular results are given to compare the performance and effectiveness of the proposed control chart to the Shewhart control chart. It is found that the proposed control chart is slightly more powerful than the Shewhart control chart to detect small shifts from the process mean when considering heavy tailed distributions. The proposed study may be extended to sampling of unequal sizes.
