Abstract:
Presence of berried females in the commercial landings of P. polyphagus during the period October to May indicated a prolonged breeding season with the peak in March/April. The eggs of P. polyphagus are slightly oval in shape with an average length of 0.5023 mm against the average breadth of 0.4255 mm. Average weight of recently laid chrome orange eggs was 4.66 x 10-5 mg. Fecundity study of 30 berried females ranging in tail length between 139 mm to 211 mm and weighing between 130 gm and 360 gm in tail weight during October, 1974 to May 1975 gave estimates of 83,960 to 790,880 eggs. Fecundity/tail length/tail weight relationships have been presented in the form of regression equations.
