Abstract:
Poplar wood (Populus ciliata) of mesh size +50 (approx 1.0 mm) was subjected to acid catalyzed aceto and organosolv delignification with aliphatic acids, like acetic, formic acid and propionic acids, to evaluate its suitability for pulping by establishing some conditions. Poplar wood was delignified with 95 and 85% of acetic acid and propionic acids respectively and % catalyst (HCl) concentration of 0.25 and 0.20 respectively. Pulp under these conditions gives 50 - 60% yield, with Kappa No. for pulp making paper for performing and Klason Lignin 4 - 10%; but it was observed that formic acid do not delignify this wood.
