Temperature effect on phosphate/nitrate exchange studies.

Abstract:
Phosphate sorption on the strong anion exchanger Amberlite IRA-400 (NO-3 form) is studied as a function of temperature (25 °C - 50 °C) at initial low (0. 161-0. 807 mmol. /L) and high (3. 874-6. 134 mmol. /L) phosphate concentrations and at two pH values 5 and 9. The ratios of nitrate released and phosphate sorbed increases with the increase in temperature and the pH of the solution while decreases with the increase in the concentration of solution. It is suggested that phosphate sorption take place initially as P043 followed by HPO42. The data is explained with the help of modified Langmuir equation and law of mass action equation. Various thermodynamic parameter (AH°, AS°, AG°) are calculated to illustrate the interaction that are responsible for the selectivity of different phosphate ions towards the anion exchanger.
