Abstract:
This paper presents an experimental study of 72 standard concrete cylinders and 12 plain concrete beams, which are studied for compression, tension and flexure strength. In this regard two different concretes are studied of which one is made with crushed stone aggregate and the other with over burnt brick fragment aggregate as an alternate to standard crushed stone aggregate. Other ingredients such as sand, cement are kept constant in order to trace the viability of over burnt brick fragment aggregate in concrete manufacturing. In addition to this, two material ratios (i.e., 1:2:4 and 1:1.5:3) and three different water/cement ratios (i.e, o.55, o.5 and 0.45) are studied. Ultimate strength in compression and in tension by using the splitting tensile strength test and flexure strength of plain concrete beams is studied up to destruction. The both concretes pertaining to the tension behavior are compared neck to neck, in order to trace the real behavior of structural concrete made with over burnt brick fragment aggregate as an alternate to standard crushed stone aggregate.
