Abstract:
With the objective to evaluate the exudative pleural effusion by histopathological examination of pleura with Abram`s closed pleural biopsy needle, this study was conducted at Medical "C" Unit of Khyber Teaching hospital Peshawar, over a year period from 6th January 1995 to 3rd December 1995. 30 patients with exudative pleural effusion underwent closed pleural biopsy with Abram`s needle in standard way. 3 biopsy specimens were obtained in each cash, which were then analyzed by histopathology. Patients in whom a definite diagnosis could not be obtained were further investigated. Confirmed histopathological diagnosis was possible in 16 (53%) patients. Out of these 16 patients, 62% were diagnosed as tuberculosis and 37% as malignant. Hence Abram`s pleural biopsy needle in exudative pleural effusion is a time tested diagnostic tool and should continue to play a pivotal role in diagnosis and management of the patient.
