Abstract:
In the near past, several internet traffic monitoring utilities have been developed. The utilities measure number of packets received within a certain interval of time. Typically these utilities gather traffic data based on IP (Internet Protocol). These IP based utilities capture network traffic, based on IP address assigned to host. One major limitation of the previously developed utilities is that they can not partition the traffic into a set of classes. In this paper, we present a new utility, which removes this limitation and effectively partitions the traffic into three different classes. These three classes are defined as Network Traffic, Broadcast Traffic, and Workstation Traffic. The intended utility measures traffic at a time scale ranging from a few seconds to several minutes. The results demonstrate the effective working of traffic monitoring utility plotting graphs, and using the classes defined. The proposed traffic monitoring utility is presently in enhancement phase. This idea is to increase its capability to make it monitor network traffic in terms of bytes per second and packet size per second within the set of classes.
