Abstract:
It is very difficult to melt cord free borosilicate glasses. Volatilization of Na2O and B2O3 from these glasses produces cordyglass. This paper reviews published work on the volatilization of alkali boroate and borosilicate glasses. Effects of composition melt thickness, furnace atmosphere and pressure on the rate of volatilization have been discussed and some remedies suggested to control the volatilization. This information will be very useful for those who are engaged in the production of borosilicate glasses.
