Abstract:
A unani prescription which was said to cure diabetes was tested on four groups of male rats. Its exact ingredients and weights were also found in Hamdards Pharmacopoeia of Eastern Medicine. Group A was control, B was given 5 mg chlorpropamide, C, 400mg powder and D, 800 mg of powder. Treatment with 5 mg chlorpropamide/rat/day lowers the blood sugar level in normal adult male rats, with 500mg or 800mg substance/rat/day for three weeks or more produced a non-consistent decrease in the normal blood sugar levels and with a very high dose, four gm/rat day for five days produced significant(P/.05)decrease in blood sugar levels There is no acute toxicity with this high dose.
