Abstract:
Water is of overriding importance to human being. It is a unique commodity for which every one is stakeholder. Water management projects are intended to create opportunity for socio-economic activities. Lack of environmental and equity considerations, water management projects in Bangladesh have brought economics benefit to one section of the society while caused economic hardships to another section. For that reason its always wise to have effective database, National Water Resources Database opened the window for the Planners, Managers as well as all stakeholders to use the water resources in a planned and managed way. Non-water sector activities also affect water regime, and many water problems stem from activities in non-water sectors. Being a lower riparian country in the basins of the ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Meghna, water regime in Bangladesh is also affected by water management activities in upper riparian countries. In pursuing integrated water resources management (IWRM), equity should be among the overriding criteria that take into account of social, economic and environmental conditions. In common with current global concerns over wise use and effective management of water, the Government of Bangladesh is committed to exploring, developing and using its water resources to the benefit of all users. To ensure progress towards fulfilling national goals of economic development, poverty alleviation, food security, public health and safety, decent standard of living for the people and protection of the natural environment implementation of the integrated water management through National “Water Resources Database and National Water Management Plan should be the top priority. NWRD is now used for the effective planning and management of the water resources of Bangladesh.
