Abstract:
To assess the effectiveness of Magill forceps technique for the extraction of coins from the esophagus under sevoflurane inhalation anesthesia and t compare it with standard rigid esophagoscopy under formal anesthesia with endotraheal intubation. A retrospective review was conducted of patients record anaesthetized during the year 2003 for extraction of esophageal coins. 23 patients underwent extraction of coin from upper oesophagus. There were 14 boys and 9 girls, ranging in age 17 months to 6 years. (Group A) 15 patients underwent rigid oesophagoscopy with airway intubation anaesthesia whereas (GroupB) 8 patients were given mask inhalational anaesthesia with Sevoflurane. Magill forceps technique was applied for extraction of coins. All coins were removed without complication. The average time taken in group A was 30 mins and using Magill technique under Sevaflurane anaesthesia 10 minutes from induction to recovery. Magill forceps technique under mask inhalation anaesthesia with Sevoflurane has better outcome for extraction of coins from upper oesophagus when compared with standard rigid esophagoscopy. This technique minimizes instrumentation of the esophagus and offers cardio-respiratory stability.
