Abstract:
The generation of a broadband piezoelectric disk transducer, radiating into a water load is required at many operational frequencies. The limited bandwidth encountered in such cases is a consequence of the acoustic impedance mismatch between the transducer and the load. Piezoelectric transducers exhibit coupled acoustic and electric resonant behaviour. Typically there is a mismatch between acoustic impedances of high-coupling piezoelectric materials and most fluids typically water. As a result of the acoustic impedance mismatch, the quality factor (Q) of piezo material is high and has a narrow bandwidth. A design for wide band piezoelectric transducers based on the transmission line analogy has been presented to achieve a desired bandwidth and improved quarter wave matching techniques were demonstrated, both theoretically and experimentally. The beam width and bandwidth for the transducers were measured both theoretically and experimentally. All the transducers gave a good agreement with the theoretical values in term of the beam width but the bandwidths were found to vary.
