Abstract:
Sunflower seeds of the Turkish Variety exhibited maximum germination at 30°C. Germination was, respectively, either delayed or inhibited at temperatures below or above optimum level. Salinity induced by NaCl affected almost every aspect of plant life studied. Imbibition decreased as compared to the control with an increase in salt concentration. There was no significant increase in the amount of water imbibed with an increase in time interval. Lower concentration of NaCl (0.25 and 0.50%) did not significantly affect germination percentage and radicle length, while the higher concentrations significantly affected these phenomena. Sunflower seedlings were less sensitive at a late stage of development. Comparatively significant plant growth occurred at 1.0% NaCl solution in case of seedlings transferred at the primary leaf stage. Seedlings at cotyledonry stage could not survive this treatment. However, higher concentrations of NaCl affected plant height, leaf number and ratio accordingly. Pre-treatment of the seeds had no useful effect on various aspects of plant growth.
