Abstract:
The agriculture sector, which is the mainstay of Pakistan's economy, still forms about 38% of the total G.N.P. At present, separate data on different varieties of crops are available with certain limitations whereas the basis for estimation of under coverage is still not very firm. The data on major crops is rather weak, while that on wholesale harvest prices is not of the desired standard. No yearly estimates on the changes of livestock population are issued whereas data on cost of production in this sub-sector are hardly available. Data on production and prices in the fishing sub-sector also suffer from inconsistency and inadequacy. The same holds ture in the case of forestry sub-sector. Some suggestions are offered for improving agricultural statistics in Pakistan.
