Abstract:
The detailed taxonomic study regarding macro morphological description of two genera Sorbaria & Spiraea in family Rosaceae was conducted during 2004-2005 in Plant Taxonomy Laboratory and Herbarium of Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad. Quantitative & qualitative morphological characters on one species of Sorbaria genus and nine species of Spiraea genus were studied. In total of 90 herbarium specimens of both genera were examined. Based on results of this study, the diagnostic characters such as: branchelets, branchelet indumentum, leaf lamina shape, lamina length, lamina width, leaf margin, inflorescence, flower per inflorescence, sepals indumentum, petals shape, stamens number and fruit indumentum were considered. From these findings diagnostic keys were developed which can be used for correct identification and differentiation of these ten species of Sorbaria and Spiraea. Spiraea bella can be distinguished from other species due to largest leaf lamina (2.4-3.4 cm x 1.6-2.1 cm), ovate shape and serrate margin. S. boissieri and S. pilosa can be segregated from the rest of the species due to rhombate leaf lamina. It was concluded from this study that morphological parameters have been used successfully to clarify taxonomic status of these species in their relative genera.
