Abstract:
Ageing means to grow old. This process continues throughout life, physical growth is completed by early adulthood and afterwards catabolism takes over anabolism resulting in a net decrease in the number of body cells. Ageing is probably multifactorial as a sequel of interaction of several mechanisms. Adequate nutrition and a well balanced diet of vital importance is needed during old age so as to prevent common hazards of ageing. Many factors like poor income, less mobility, social isolation are known to affect the health and well being of the elderly. Today the number of old population is approximately 55 million, contributing about 6.5% of total world population. Ageing is an irreversible biological change that occurs throughout life and continues relentlessly until death. The understanding and complications of ageing both physiological and psychological have become more apparent with the advancement in medical science.
