Abstract:
Impaired cardiac function is a cause of shock in conditions such as myocardial infarction and massive pulmonary embolism. This is `cardiogenic` shock or central circulatory failure. Anunusuar. type of shock is the circulatory collapse that may occur as a result of adrenal insufficiency. This develops when a patient with Addison`s disease, or one whose adrenals have been suppressed by previous corticosteroid therapy, is subject to an exceptional stress such as an operaton or a. severe infection. In such patients the diagnostic can usually be confirmed rapidly by observing the improvement that promptly follows administration of moderate doses of corticosteroids (eg 100-200 mg of hydrocortisone hemiscuccinate intravenously).
