A new approach of utilizing plant by-products colonized by fungal mycelia for sorption of industrial heavy metal ions.

Abstract:
A new biosorbent was developd by colonizing Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.) Quelet mycelia on three agro waste viz., rice straw, wheat straw and cotton waste and usd for the removal of metal ions (Cu (II), Ni (II), Zn (II) and Cr (VI)) from electroplating industrial effluents. These three agro waste (without growing fungal mycelia) were also utilized as biosorbent of metal ions to compare biosorption potential with agro waste grown-up with fungal Mycelia. The affinity observed for metal biosorption capacities by colonized and uncolonized agro wastes was in order of: rice straw > cotton waste ³ wheat straw. The comparative assessment revealed that metal biosorption efficiency and capacity by rice straw (oven and sun dried) as well as P. ostreatus mycelia on this straw, markedly increased the uptake of Cu (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) but proved ineffective to remove Cr (VI) efficiently. However, Cr (VI) removal was best recorded in wheat straw (oven and sun dried) and associated fungal mycelia. Results obtained on comparison between drying treatments (oven and sun) showed the better biosorption efficiency and capacity was by the sun dried as compared to oven dried biomass.
