Abstract:
A twelve years old boy suffering from chronic low bowel obstruction with remission dating from newborn age is suggestive of the disease. Barium enema done carefully confirms the diagnosis. Submucosal biopsy before definitive operation is essential and should be repeated. Bad training in early life give cases of so called secondary megacolon. Swensen`s modified operation with oblique anastomosis is excellent but Soave`s operation is much simpler and safer. It keeps the distal rectum for normal rectal proprioceptive impulses on distension. Duhamel operation has also the advantage of retaining part of rectum but a stagnant pouch postoperatively is a problem.
