Abstract:
The tomato is an important economic crop grown worldwide. The numerous fungal pathogens attacking tomato crops and causing severe diseases lead to yield loss. This study aimed to isolate, identify and characterize the tomato fungal pathogens in District Kamber Shahdad kot. Subsequently thirty diseased samples of tomato plants (leaves and stems) were collected from different villages of Taluka Kamber District Kamber Shahdad kot. All samples were tagged to Postgraduate Research laboratory Department of Botany, Shah Abdul University Khairpur, for proceeding steps. The petri plates containing PDA media were inoculated separately and incubated at room temperature (250C to 300C) for growth and development of pathogens. Within three days fungal mycelia appeared at the point of inoculation and later one week reached at desirable growth and spores were formed. The fungi were identified on the basis of morphological characteristics such as morphology of cultures, nature and type of mycelium, arrangement of spores, shape and colour of spores. On the basis of these characteristics and suggested methods of mycologists the two species of Alternaria i.e Alternaria alternata and Alternaria solani while one of Curvularia species Curvularia lunata were identified from infected tomato leaves and stem samples. Finally, this is the first ever report in term of identification of tomato fungal pathogens in Sindh and could insight the common host-pathogen interaction in future.
