Abstract:
Modern approach for the biodegradation of toxic waste water is the absorption of bacteria on solid support and bioreactor setup. For effective results microbes were slowly acclimatized to the toxic compound, prior to adsorption. Pure culture of Pseudomonas putida Fl and activated sludge, both were acclimatized stepwise to industrial wastewater as well as phenols in separate reaction vessels. P. putida Fl culture acclimatized to phenol was used to coat sand (washed and sterilized), and Fixed Film Bioreactor was setup. Phenolic solution (4g/L) was continuously run through column in these experiment reduction of phenol from 4g/L to 1.78 g/L in 168 hours was found. Selected bacterial strains, acclimatized cultures and immobilized cells in bioreactors can be used for degradation of toxic phenolic components in industrial wastewaters.
