Abstract:
Investigation for VA mycorrhizal status of seventy six plant species was carried out in six different stands during the period May-August 1994. Majority of the herbaceous angiosperms including grasses and ferns were observed to be heavily VA mycorrhizal. Hyphal infections of endophytes comprising thick walled, septate and aseptate, branched as well as unbranched, coiled internal hyphae forming clamp connections were noticed in root samples. Vesicles of various dimensions and shapes, highly developed, dichotomously branched arbuscules. Thick-walled star-shaped endospores and conidia of pathogenic fungi were observed in rot portions. However, some plant roots were found lacking in both vesicles and arbuscules. A comparative study of the six stands for VAM status revealed great variations in infection percentages of the same plant species in different stands.
