Abstract:
This project was designed to study the effect of enrofloxacin and oxytetracycline on the immune system and blood parameters of broiler chicks. A total number of 120, one-day-old, broiler chicks were randomly divided into three equal groups; A, B and C. All groups were vaccinated against Newcastle Disease. Infectious bursal disease and hydropericardium syndrome. Grous A and B were medicated with enrofloxacin and oxytetracycline, respectively, at therapeutic dose from 5th to 15th day and from 21st to 25th day of age while group C was non medicated. Immune response against ND virus, IBD virus and HPS virus was determined on 1st, 14th 28th and 42nd day of age. Estimation of blood parameters (Total leucocyte count, total erythrocyte count and differential leucocytic count) were also conducted on day 1, 14, 28 and 42 of age. On day 42, organ body weight indices and gross lesions on spleen, thymus, bursa of Fabricius and kidneys were observed. Histopathology of these organs of Fabricius and kidney were also studied. Results indicated that geometric mean antibody titres were lower in birds medicated with oxytetracycline than birds medicated with enrofloxacin and the control birds. There was no significant dfference in weight of spleen,. Bursa of Fabricius, thymus and kidney of all groups. No gross and histopathological lesions were observed, in spleen, thymus, bursa of Fabricius and kidney of all groups. TLC and TEC were low and In DLC, lymphocytes were increased while heterophils were decreased in group medicated with oxytetracycline.
