BOT-1823: Phytochemicals and Pharmacological Activities of Trifolium repens L. Extract

Abstract:
Trifolium, one of the major genera in the fabaceae family, well-known for its300 species and use in agriculture. The European perennial herbaceousTrifolium repens, commonly called shaftal or white clover, has white flowerheads, spreads rapidly and flourishes on moist soil and sunlight. T. repens, atraditional plant with high protein content, offers high-quality forage, soil healthimprovement, erosion reduction, green manure, antibacterial, antiinflammatory,antioxidant and medicinal properties is used to treat stomach pain, jointdisorders, coughs, colds, fever, and eye wash. This study investigatedantioxidant properties, cytotoxic, phytotoxic and phytochemical composition ofT. rapens evaluated by using various methods. This study revealed the presenceof bioactive compounds like flavonoids, phenolics and tennins with significantantioxidant, cytotoxic and phytotoxic effect in various assays. The resultsshowed that ethanol extract, despite slightly higher %RSA values at higherconcentrations, had the highest IC50 value (519.3 µg/mL), making it the leastpotent. The hexane extract and chloroform extract demonstrated the highestantioxidant activity, with absorbance values nearly matching ascorbic acid athigher doses. The chloroform extract demonstrated the highest antioxidantpotential, with absorbance values reaching 1.762 at 400 µg/mL, nearly matchingthe standard ascorbic acid value of 1.788 at the same concentration. All threeTrifolium repens extracts showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity in the brineshrimp assay. The hexane extract was most potent caused 80 %mortalityfollowed by ethanol and chloroform, capable of inducing higher levels ofmortality at lower concentrations. Phytotoxic evaluation found that hexaneextract inhibited growth at 50 µg/mL, while ethanol and chloroform extractspromoted root growth at 25 µg/mL and 5.02 cm respectively. Results werestatistically analysed using LD50 for regression line calculation. This studyexplored the medical potential of plant, possibly aid for drug development in thepharmaceutical industry, potentially validate traditional utilization of Trifoliumrapens and revealed its active extract.
