Abstract:
Toothache during pregnancy retards the normal growth of foetus due to lack of food intake by the mother. According to a recent survey of two villages of Punjab, children of 5 to 11 years of age were invariably found suffering from periodontal diseases. 96% school children of Quetta were found infected with dental diseases. Pregnant mothers are found suffering from hyperplasia and bleeding of gums, dental decay, alveolar abscess, pregnancy tumour of gums and ulceration in oral cavity. Dental problems are equally affecting the urban population. Stress was laid on the dental public health programme and its inclusion in the curriculum of graduate level and post graduate diploma recommended and the exemption of dental medicines from the generic scheme demanded.
