Abstract:
With the development of radio-receptor binding assay, it had now become clear that multiple 5-hydroxy tryptamine (5-HT) receptors exist in the central nervous system (CNS). At least five distinct 5- HT binding sites have been differentiated during the last ade. Ligand binding studies are also capable of demonstrating the affinity of a drug towards the known 5-1-IT binding sites but do not reveal whether the drug acts as an agonist or antagonist. Therefore, the behavioural responses to receptor activation have gained attention. The behaviour have more than one component and also be influenced by other neurotransmitter systems. Nevertheless when used in conction with other pharmacological and biochemical observations the studies have provided a useful indication of the functional significance of the receptor types. Present review provides a systematic integration of biochemical and pharmacological studies dealing with the 5-HT receptor types in the CNS and mediated behavioural responses.
