Abstract:

Ten species of the genus Cosmarium Corda ex Ralfs (phylum Volvophycota) were collected from various freshwater habitats in the provinces of the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir during January 2004 and December 2006. They were taxonomically investigated and described for the first time from their area of collection. They were found to grow luxuriantly in winter, their growth diminished in spring and summer but could not be collected in autumn. Cosmarium alatum Kirchner, C. biloculatum Brebisson and C. concentricum are being reported for the first time from Pakistan.
