Abstract:
A study was carried out to investigate the involvement of mycorrhizas in interplant 15N transfer in a model pasture system. In a pot experiment white clover (Trifolium repens) labelled with 15N was grown in a close association to rye grass (Lolium perenne). The soil (sterile or fresh) was inoculated with VAM inoculum of Glomus mosseae. The transfer of 15N from white clover to rye grass was increased by VAM inoculation. The transfer of 15N was small in relation to total 15N in the receiver plants. There was no evidence, however, of increased transfer of 15N through the soil in VAM inoculated system with enhanced 15N interplant transfer, suggesting the likely involvement of VAM fungal hyphae.
