Abstract:
A survey of the distribution and abundance of marine organisms on different beaches of Mekran in Pakistan revealed the presence of the following number of species belonging to major groups: rocky beach of the West Bay of Gawader-gastropods 13, bivalves 18, crustacean 10, annelids 5, seaweeds 5; rocky beach of the East Bay of Gawader-gastropods 13, bivalves 8, crustaceans 12, polychaetes 6; rocky beach at Jiwani-gastropods 16, bivalves 8, crustaceans 12, seaweeds 6. The outstanding feature of the rocky beach of the West Bay of Gawader is the presence of plastic mud on rocks, and the occurrence of 18 species of bivalves, four of which are oysters of the genera Crassostrea and Saccostrea. The principal feature of the rocky beach of the East Bay of Gawader is the great abudance of the green mussel Perna viridis. The rocky beach at Jiwani is unique on the coast of Pakistan in view of the occurrence of the feather-star Commanthus samoanus. Species diversity on these beaches, however, seems to be lower compared to the rocky beaches on the coast of Sind.
