Abstract
In a field study the productive and nitrogen utilization efficiency of two nitrogen sources, ordinary urea and slow release nitrogen sulphur coated urea (SC), at different rates and application methods was determined in wheat grown on clay loam soil containing 0.065% N, 8.4 ppm available PlOs and with a pH value of 7.8. The results revealed that band application of nitrogen fertilizers appeared to be better than broadcast and broadcasting + Incorporating treatments irrespective of the sources and rates of application. The highest productive efficiency of 52.85 q grains per hectare was obtained by band placement of 114 kg N per hectare In urea as against 45.75 q in case of 114 kg N in the form of SCU, whereas the nitrogen utilization efficiency was found to be the highest (41.46%) in plots treated with 57 kg N per hectare In urea as banding and the lowest of 17.60% in the treatment of 57 kg N per hectare in SCU as broadcasting + incorporating. As regards sources, urea nitrogen was utilized more effectively and efficiently by the wheat crop towards production and building up protein contents of the grain than that of slow release nitrogen In SCU.
